How NOT to make a sports car commercial

The Audi R8 is a mid-engined supercar named after a 5 time winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. You’d think that it would pretty easy to made a stirring advertisement for a car like that, what you do get is the most soul-less sports car advert I have ever seen in my life. You hear the cars engine for precisely two seconds and see a few shots of the car on a road. There is a long voice-over listing the past technical achievements of Audi and there is no mention made of the performance of the car itself.… Read the rest

The greatest advertisement EVER!!!!

Shell has just released ‘The Circuit’, a new advertisement to celebrate 60 years of its partnership with Ferrari. It features several historic Ferrari F1 cars driving through the streets of cities like New York, Monaco, Rio de Janerio. The ad took over a month to film and at a reported $2 million it is the most expensive commercial ever made.

Just sit back and enjoy hearing some of the most glorious sounding engines ever made.

F1 circuit guide

SFF1 just used a version of my F1 circuit guide on their site. It was inspired by Shane SF neighbourhood guide and is a mashup of several technologies including:

I’ll go into more details in a later post but it basically uses the TagMaps callback function to pull in content from Flickr, Wikipedia and Youtube to give a quick overview of each track.

You can also play with a version of the guide on my website.

It is a great tool to analyze your performance and see how different lines have affected you laptimes – works even better when you have a DL1 or some other data logger. In-car video is also a great way to give people an idea of what its like to track a car and maybe even understand you keep grinning from ear to ear after each event.

However when I see the average setup (for an Elise) at an HPDE it looks to go one of two ways

1) The full on treatment: This is a full on video system that gives you the best quality video and audio and will usually record several hours without any issues.… Read the rest
