This 2017 BMW i8 is one of just 400 Protonic Red Editions produced worldwide, making it a rare and collectible example of BMW’s groundbreaking plug-in hybrid sports coupe. Finished in Protonic Red Metallic with Frozen Grey accents, this special edition features a color combination and styling details exclusive to the Protonic Red variant. It’s part of a total global i8 production run of fewer than 20,500 units from 2014 to 2020.
Powered by a turbocharged 1.5-liter inline-three paired with a front-mounted electric motor, the i8 produces a combined 357 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. The gasoline engine drives the rear wheels via a 6-speed automatic transmission, while the electric motor powers the front wheels through a 2-speed gearbox, resulting in all-wheel drive and a 0–60 mph time of approximately 4.2 seconds.
The plug-in hybrid system allows for around 15 miles of electric-only range, with a total driving range of over 300 miles when combined with the gasoline engine. Charging is compatible with standard 120V outlets or Level 2 stations. With its carbon-fiber structure, low center of gravity, and AWD, the i8 delivers confident handling and a surprisingly refined ride.

This i8 remains unmodified and wears its original Protonic Red paint, which shows well with light wear consistent with age and mileage.

Ownership Experience
I’ve owned this i8 for the past three years and it’s been a joy as a daily driver. It delivers a unique blend of style, performance, and efficiency. The gullwing doors are endlessly amusing, and the rear seats provide some welcome practicality—for either storage or child seats. With regular charging, it’s easy to exceed 400 miles per tank, making it surprisingly usable for road trips or commuting.
