{"id":522,"date":"2010-05-22T14:52:47","date_gmt":"2010-05-22T21:52:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rahulnair.com\/blog\/?p=522"},"modified":"2010-09-18T23:19:12","modified_gmt":"2010-09-19T06:19:12","slug":"picked-up-some-lotus-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.rahulnair.net\/blog\/2010\/05\/22\/picked-up-some-lotus-history\/","title":{"rendered":"Picked up some Lotus History"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rnair\/4630129802\/\" title=\"Piston from Lotus Cosworth DFV 339 by rnair, on Flickr\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3341\/4630129802_07c07b032c.jpg\" alt=\"Piston from Lotus Cosworth DFV 339\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The mailman just brought me this amazing piece of Lotus F1 history: a piston from the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cosworth_DFV\">Cosworth DFV<\/a> engine #339 used in the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lotus_81\">Lotus 81<\/a> Formula 1 car. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rnair\/4629527709\/\" title=\"Piston from Lotus Cosworth DFV 339 by rnair, on Flickr\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3350\/4629527709_4e91c6919b.jpg\" alt=\"Piston from Lotus Cosworth DFV 339\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the 70s and 80s, Team Lotus was in the habit of keeping the pistons from rebuilds to use as VIP gifts. Each engines pistons were labeled and stored but not all were presented. With reference to the teams archives, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.classicteamlotus.co.uk\">Classic Team Lotus<\/a> is able to identify the detailed competition history for the engines in which the pistons ran. A great deal of polishing, then mounting on a wooden plinth, complete with presentation plaque, makes a rather special item of memorabilia. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rnair\/4629529117\/\" title=\"Piston from Lotus Cosworth DFV 339 by rnair, on Flickr\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4021\/4629529117_58e4a26313.jpg\" alt=\"Piston from Lotus Cosworth DFV 339\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now while a piston from an F1 engine is amazing in itself (Ferrari charges >$600 for a 2000 piston), this particular engine has some additional history that makes it even more unique.
